NBA Beat: Agent Zero-ed
April 9th, 2007
The NBA playoffs are made radiant by the hustle and unparalleled skill its stars throw into the mix.
With that having been said, it is truly unfortunate that one of the game’s most noteworthy gunners, Gilbert Arenas, aka “Agent Zero”, has had to be shot down by a knee ailment that should keep him off the court for the next 2-3 months.
Arenas recently suffered a season-ending lateral meniscus tear in a Washington Wizards 108-100 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.
Suffice to say, the boys from the nation’s capital will miss the “Hibachi” man’s 28.4 ppg and 6 dimes. The Wizards are pretty much a lock to make the postseason, but with a backcourt of Jarvis Hayes and Antonio Daniels, plus only Antawn Jamison remaining from Washington’s 3-headed monster (Caron Butler is out with a hand injury), it seems unlikely that their playoff fate will include a trip to round 2 and beyond.
If the “big stage” were upon us today, the Wiz would face another team riddled by injuries- the Toronto Raptors who, in all likelihood, will be competing without two of their European mainstays in Jorge Garbajosa and Andrea Bargnani.
Ironically, pitting two teams with pretty depleted rosters should make for rather riveting playoff drama, but the truth is- would you, as a “fan”, go and watch your favorite soap, if YOU KNEW it would go on as scheduled, absent of the, typically, biggest names on the marquee? I say that 5-6 out of ten people would be, at the very least, disheartened.
For those you just love the game- let’s move on, shall we. Move we shall, though, with a tinge of “sadness” to every step.
=( (Aw, c’mon, smile already)
